If you do intentionally network, you have an advantage! If you don’t, you are missing out. Networking is about building meaningful relationships that can help you grow personally and professionally. But like any great project, successful networking starts with a plan.

As a project manager, you’re already a pro at setting goals and timelines, so why not apply those skills to your networking strategy? Here are some tips that can help you with networking:

• Create Networking Goals: What are you hoping to achieve through networking? Maybe you want to connect with industry leaders, find a mentor, or explore new job opportunities. Whatever your goal, having a clear focus will help you make the most of your efforts.

• Identify Key Contacts: Who do you need in your network to reach those goals? Are they peers in your field, specialized recruiters, or leaders in your company? Make a list and pinpoint how you can connect with them.

• Set a Timeline: When do you want to achieve these networking milestones? Whether it’s attending a certain number of events in the next six months or landing an informational interview with a key contact, setting a timeline keeps you accountable.

• Leverage Your Resources: Don’t forget about the people you already know! Colleagues, former clients, and friends can be invaluable resources for introductions and advice.

• Track Your Progress: Keep a simple log of who you’ve reached out to, what stage the relationship is in (i.e. acquaintance, colleague, close friend), and any follow-up actions you need to take. Think of it as managing your network the way you manage a project.

You can transform your networking efforts from something random into something intentional—and highly effective, by creating a networking plan.
